UNIT 2 READING 2 “Five New Words at a Time”

“Five New Words at a Time”
The first passage is about Yu-Lan,
a Chinese girl who moved to the United
States. Yu-Lan has trouble learning English, and her mother sees that she is
unhappy. Although Yu-Lan’s mother works hard at her job, she takes time to
study English with her daughter. They read together and learn five new words
every day. Yu-Lan admires her mother’s strength, and they both learn English
quickly. Looking back on her experience, Yu-Lan realizes how much she

admires her mother. In “The Quilt,” a poet compares her family to an old quilt.

are often made of carefully stitched scraps of
fabric cut from garments that have worn out.
Jackets can be quilted as well as blankets.
Centuries ago, Chinese and Egyptians wore

quitled clothing to stay warm.
